Why the cost cutting mentality won’t revive the economy.

Why the cost cutting mentality won’t revive the economy.

Personally, I think it’s a no-brainer, to say that the cost cutting, slash and burn mentality of governments and big business can never fix the deep financial hole mankind finds itself in.

Why can this approach not work? First, if you cut costs, you usually begin by cutting jobs. This means less people have work and therefore they have less money. If people have less available cash they are going to spend less on everything. They will cut the cost of their weekly groceries and buy fewer items. They will try to cut the amount of electricity and gasoline they use. They will spend less on almost everything – partly to save the little money they do have and partially to have a little left over for emergencies.

If people are forced to spend less, they will not buy the corporate products, goods and services. If this happens, the corporate world then makes less profit and their stock holders are not happy. (As if the rest of us care!)

So, if corporate slash and burn really worked, it wouldn’t now be coming back to bite them in the ‘rear end’!

Governments are also cutting costs but they still believe they can spend big on themselves and on unnecessary projects and can still pander to the whims of their corporate sponsors, while simultaneously putting up the cost of those necessities which they can sting the whole population for – things like rates, water and assorted community infrastructure projects. They know that you have no choice but to pay – and so they squeeze the average person for all they’ve got…. And more!

So, as you can see, the whole cost cutting mentality cannot and will not get us out of the mess we’re in.

If we can’t solve the problem using the old, flawed method, what can we do?

Our TV morning shows are full of ‘experts’ who tell us that the answer is to scrimp and save and generally give up most of the niceties of life. Now I’m not an advocate of gross materialism but I don’t think people should have to give up absolutely everything and try to live on the bare minimum.

Our planet has the capacity to provide mankind with all the things it truly needs to survive and thrive and yet the few have hogged most of these provisions for themselves and left the majority to fend on their own. This is wrong!

So, if the old, ‘greed is good and to heck with everyone else’ ways don’t work, what can we do?

The answer is…. bring in a new system – one which is fair and just and good for all of mankind and not just for a select few.

Is it really possible to create a new civilization?

Absolutely!

If we go back to the concept that everything we humans could possibly need for our wellbeing and survival is available on this planet then all we have to do is tap into these resources and use them. This will only be hindered if we deliberately ruin our ecosystem and cut off our supply of naturally occurring abundance.

It's time to evaluate our situation

So, let’s have a re-think about the way we conduct life on this planet and let’s stop using the cost cutting mentality and find a path to prosperity
